A powerful earthquake toppled a 17-story apartment building in southern Taiwan on Saturday, killing at least three people, including a 10-day-old girl, according to Cti News.

据台湾中天电视报道，2月6日的强地震致台湾南部一座17层的居民楼倒塌，造成至少3人死亡，其中包括一名出生10天的女婴。

➤这里的topple指“使...倒下”，其他意思相近的词还有collapse，fall down和tumble。不过，这几个词在具体用法上还是有些差别，topple前面的主语一定是外力，导致某个建筑物倒塌，比如这里的A powerful earthquake toppled a 17-story apartment building；而collapse，fall down和tumble的主语基本都是建筑物本身，比如：a 17-story apartment building collapsed/fell down/tumbled down in a powerful earthquake。

YUSHU, Qinghai - About 300 people have been killed with 8,000 injured and more others buried under the toppled houses after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit northwest China's Qinghai Province early on Wednesday, officials said.

Many others are still buried under the debris of collapsed houses near the epicenter, said Huang Limin, deputy secretary-general of the government of the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu.

About 700 soldiers are now struggling to clear away the rubble and rescue the buried people, a spokesman with the Qinghai Provincial Emergency Office said.

More than 5,000 additional rescuers, including soldiers and medical workers have been dispatched to the quake-hit region, according to a news conference held by the Qinghai provincial government.

"Our first task is to save students. Schools are always places that have many people," said Kang Zifu, an army officer in the rescue operation in Yushu. CASUALTIES, DAMAGES AND LOSSES

More than 85 percent of the houses in the Jiegu Township near the epicenter had collapsed, said Zhuohuaxia, a publicity official with the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu.

"The streets in Jiegu are thronged with panic, injured people, with many bleeding in the head," he said.

"Many students are buried under the debris due to building collapse at a vocational school," he said.

"A large crack appears in the wall of the Yushu Hotel, and part of a government office building also collapsed," he said.

"I can see injured people everywhere. The biggest problem now is that we lack tents, we lack medical equipment, medicine and medical workers," he said.

The epicenter is at the Rima Village in the Shanglaxiu Township, about 50 km west of Jiegu, the government seat of the Yushu prefecture, and about 800 km away from Xining, the Qinghai provincial capital.

"The epicenter is a pasturing area and sparsely-populated. I think the quake would not cause casualties as heavy as those in Jiegu," Zhuohuaxia said.

Jiegu has a population of about 100,000, including permanent residents and migrant people, he added.

"Buildings in our school were all toppled, and five pupils have died," said a teacher surnamed Chang at the Yushu Primary School, a boarding school with about 1,000 students.

"Morning sessions did not begin when the quake happened. Some pupils ran out of dorms alive, and those who had not escaped in time were buried," Chang said.

"The houses here are almost all made of wood and earthen walls, which will easily collapse when a quake happens," said Karsum Nyima, deputy director of the News Department of the Yushu TV Station.

Although Yushu is a sparsely-populated region, experts said the quake is very likely to cause "heavy" casualties.

The dead were identified as Fang Cheng-mao and his sister Fang Shu-chuan. The two siblings and six other family members were trapped in debris when their two-storey home -- a furniture shop -- collapsed in the magnitude 6.7 temblor that struck off southwestern Taiwan at 8:26 p.m. Fang Cheng-mao and Fang Shu-chuan showed no signs of life when they were taken out of the debris by rescuers. Another of their siblings, Fang Shu-hui, was critically injured and rushed to hospital where she remains in intensive care. The four other family members sustained only minor injuries. According to the Seismology Center of the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) , the earthquake struck at 8: 26 p.m., with the epicenter located 22.8 km southwest off the CWB's Hengchun earthquake station in southern Taiwan, at a depth of 21.9 km. It was the strongest earthquake recorded in the area in a century, seismologists said, adding that the region is not a seismically active area because of its relatively old tectonic structures. The tremor was felt across Taiwan, registering an intensity of 4 in Kaohsiung, an intensity of 3 in central Taiwan cities, and an intensity of 2 in Taipei in the north, CWB seismologists said. It shook buildings and knocked objects off the shelves in Taipei in northern Taiwan, but no casualties or damage were reported in the capital city. Phone lines were cut in the southern cities of Kaohsiung and Pingtung. The quake also triggered fires and gas leaks in several other townships and villages in Pingtung County and neighboring Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County, which have all been brought under control without causing major damage, local firefighting officials said. The National Fire Administration formed an emergency response panel at its headquarters shortly after the earthquake, and its southern Taiwan branch sent fire engines and personnel to assist the Hengchun township government in rescue and firefighting operations. Although their epicenters were 20 to 30 kilometers apart, seismologists said the magnitude 6.4 quake should be classified as an aftershock. The quake hit on the second anniversary of a massive earthquake off Indonesia that triggered a powerful tsunami in the Indian Ocean which killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries. As the epicenters of Tuesday's earthquake and its strongest aftershock were close to Taiwan proper, seismologists said the tremors were not expected to trigger a tsunami. However, they urged residents in coastal areas to be on guard against abrupt changes in sea level. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said there was no threat of a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami, based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. Taiwan is an island frequently rattled by minor and moderate quakes, which cause little or no damage.
